Ex-international Taribo West has tipped minnows Albania and Slovakia, as well as Turkey to spring surprises in Europe’s top football competition, describing the three teams as the “Leicester of Euro 2016.”
The Euro 2016 began in France on Friday.
“On paper, champions Spain, Germany and England look good but there are lots of small teams that can spring surprises. Teams like Albania and Slovakia could be dangerous; Turkey too can cause upsets. The influx of world-class players to the Turkish league has helped stir up confidence among the country’s players. These three can be the Leicester of Euor 2016,” the former AC Milan defender said.
“The smaller teams are hungry and have taken time to prepare for the tournament. It’s going to be man-to-man. I’m putting my bet on these teams because they want to make a name for themselves.”
The Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games gold medallist also tipped English strikers Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane to shine at the competition in France.
“Vardy and Kane are hungry, they want to prove themselves on the big stage and their partnership has been amazing. In friendlies prior to the tournament, they did very well. I think France will give them the right platform to establish their names,” the ex-Auxerre centre-back added.
